Located in the municipality of Oldambt, Winschoten is the largest city in Groningen, Netherlands. It was a separate municipality before it was merged with Oldambt in 2010. The city is well connected to Germany via rail. Winschoten is home to amazing historic sites, cultural places and fun activities for all ages. The city boasts three large windmills that are run by volunteer millers and are well maintained for the benefit of visitors. Tourists usually make a beeline for the Molen Berg windmill that has an unusual design and was built back in 1854. The many churches of Winschoten are also notable attractions of this city. The oldest church in the city was established in the thirteenth century with Roman and Gothic features. A Neo-Gothic church at the Marktplein also makes for an interesting visit. It was built in 1880 by Alfred Tepe and features a high sandstone altar and stained glass windows. One of the most interesting features of the city is the event called De Run. It is the oldest ultra-marathon in the country that started in 1976. It is a hundred kilometer race conducted over a ten kilometer paved lap across the city. People can also choose to participate in a separate fifty kilometer race. Winschoten also has a unique sculpture showing a person licking his plate as a dog licks his feet. It is believed to impersonate the residents of the city as they used to be called ‘plate lickers’. The monument is located right across the former De Klinker theatre and tops everyone’s must-visit list in the city. The city is also home to one of the top three rose gardens in the Netherlands, so make sure to stop by if you have a penchant for roses. When in Winschoten you can visit Museum Stoomgemaal which contains a steam-powered pump from 1878.
