The Alcazar of Toledo is a stone fortification that is a sight worth seeing. Right at the highest point of the city, it stands breathtakingly beautiful and tall. The Alcazar, today, has been reopened to the public and serves as a large military museum. Not only are the exhibits and artifacts of the museum worth seeing, but the Alcaza in itself is absolutely stunning.
If you are interested in the history of the country, then you are in for a treat at the Alcazar. There is so much to learn and the content is available in both Spanish and English. The collection at this museum is vast to say the least. One of the highlights of the museum is the historical section that offers great insight into the nation’s history. Among the most chilling sights is the recreation of commander Moscardo’s office that was wrecked with bullets. There really is a tremendous amount to see, and what that means is a lot of walking around. Some of the highlights of the collection include the monumental central patio which is decorated with Habsburg coats of arms and the archaeological remains from the Moorish days. Please note that even though the museum itself is located within the walls of the Alcazar, it does not fully encompass a tour of the Alcazar itself. A lot of people who are not really too interested in the military and the nation’s history in general prefer to just visit the Alcazar and take in its beauty from the outside. Some parts of the museum’s collection have been displayed in a terrace which provides an eagle’s eye view of the entire city of Toledo. Even art lovers will really enjoy the museum since the collection includes several beautiful hand painted works showcased in glass cases.
For visitors, it is important to note that photography is not permitted in the museum.
