Stonehenge is an iconic cultural landmark. It is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire just 3km (2 miles) from Amesbury. Stonehenge was built over a period starting from c.3, 000BC. The site consists of a circle of stones standing up right. The size of the monument is remarkable considering the primitive tools that were available at the time. Stone would have had to have been quarried, transported and erected in precise position. Although it is unsure what rituals were performed here it is evident from the positioning of the stones that the rituals were connected to the seasons and the movements of the sun and moon. Not all the stones have survived but there are still enough standing to give us a pretty good idea of what it would have looked like. Stonehenge is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stonehenge is just one of several hundred burial mounds and there are scores of prehistoric monuments around Stonehenge. Silbury Hill is Europe’s largest burial mound and West Kennet Long Barrow is the largest chambered tomb in the UK.
