Modern, dynamic, clean and a cultural epicenter, the name of Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, first appeared in manuscripts in 1252. Founded as a fort so that the original founders such as Birger Jarl could ensure control of the waterways, Stockholm still boasts many of its ancient palaces, cathedrals and cobbled lanes. Its historic center, Gamla Stan is considered one of Europe’s best preserved medieval city centers. The main streets of Osterlanggatan and Vasterlanggatan, along with Stockholm’s oldest square, the Stortoget, are home to many attractions, cafes, bars and handicraft shops. The thirteenth century royal burial church, the Riddarholmen Church is well-worth a stop. The most popular building in Gamla Stan is the Royal Palace, boasting an incredible 600 rooms, and incorporating several museums. The Nobel Museum and the Stockholm Cathedral are also located here. Stockholm pays homage to its famous sculptor Carl Milles, at Millesgarden, his former home and studio. Ancient and newer works come together in the beautiful gardens of this house. A permanent collection of striking modern art can be seen at Stockholm’s Moderna Museet, with works by Dali, Warhol, Picasso and other famous names. Throughout the city, you will find sculptures and beautiful buildings, but none is more impressive than the Stadshuset, or City Hall, famous for its grand ceremonial halls and for being the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet held annually. To get a true feel of Sweden’s traditions and earlier ways of life, head to the world’s first open air museum, Skansen, with its collection of 150 traditional homes and exhibits.
