The cultural treasure of Seoul is the capital city of the southern peninsular state of South Korea. The word Seoul derives from the Korean word for capital, but it is equally regarded the soul of the nation. It is one of the largest cities in the world by landmass and population density, with over half of its ten million population concentrated in the National Capital Area of Incheon and Gyeonggi. The city has a profound history spanning over two thousand years, beginning in the year 18 BCE when it was established in Baekje, a member of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Since then, it has incorporated a wide range of different cultures and languages, and these find expression in the city’s spectacular array of cuisine, and its breathtaking architecture. Dividing the city in half is the majestic Han River, used for centuries as a trade route to China. Soaring mountains surround the city’s flat plain, turning it into a winter wonderland when the snows begin to fall. One would not want to miss a photo opportunity in Yeouido Park, famous for its inspiring Cherry Blossoms that tint the landscape with rosy hues, or in Bukhansan National Park, home to the granite-topped Bukhansan mountain that attracts a record ten million hikers a year. Just a short subway or bus ride away, the mountain is also accessible by cable cart, and offers panoramic views of all that nature has to offer, scattered with remote temples to explore. Other major attractions in Seoul include the National Museum of Korea, home to countless cultural treasures from surrounding regions, and any one of the city’s four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the ornate Changdeokgung Palace Complex and the centuries-old Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.
