Dating back to 1755, Savannah’s City Market is located two blocks away from River Street. This historic market is where fishermen and farmers used to bring their goods to sell. It still remains the hub of all activities in Savannah’s historic district. City Market has stood the test of time and much turmoil and has been torn down three times. The version of the City Market that is seen now was built in 1872, using Romanesque architecture with ornamental brick structure and circular windows.
Situated in the four blocks between the Ellis and Franklin Squares, City Market is the place to go if you are looking for a dining and shopping experience. The former warehouses now house the most vibrant art galleries, restaurants, and specialty shops. It is home to a number of eateries, both casual and upscale. From an award-winning steak and seafood house, to British style bakeries and continental cafes, tourists visiting the City Market will be spoilt for choice. You are sure to find it a sheer pleasure to stroll among the art galleries and studios in the day. Shopaholics will find specialty shops and boutiques offering a wide range of souvenirs and antiques. At night, the colony brings out a lively nightlife, with concerts and pubs.
City Market is rightfully called the “Art and Soul of Savannah”. It is truly worth a visit when in Savannah, where you can experience a variety of cultures blending seamlessly with art.
