The Best of San Marino in Half a Day
If you only have a few hours when passing through San Marino you should make smart use of your time. This itinerary will help you see the major tourist attractions, starting from Sammarinese Museum of Ancient Arms and ending at Basilica di San Marino.
The Republic of San Marino is a microstate enclave in Italy between the regions of Marche and Emilia Romagna. The capital is San Marino City and there are nine “castilli” or small towns. The country covers just 61km² and is the oldest surviving sovereign state and oldest constitutional republic in the world. San Marino was founded by a Roman stonemason named Marinus on Monte Titano in 301AD. The historic center of San Marino City and its highest peak, Mt. Titano are UNESCO sites. Visit the hilltop fortress and its three towers which top the peaks of Mt. Titano. The Second Cesta Tower houses a museum dedicated to St. Marinus and a weapons museum. The Cathedral of San Marino has seven altars and some beautiful art including a statue by Tadolini and the relics of St. Marinus. Visit the Museo San Francisco and the Museo di Stato di San Marino in the Palazzo Pergami Belluzzi. For something different visit the Museum of Curiosities. You can see the changing of the guard from April to September every half hour from 8am to 6pm outside the Palazzo Publico. And shopping in San Marino is tax free!
