Korundi is one of Rovaniemi’s most renowned cultural institutions. In fact, this unique site is home to two cultural establishments, the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland and the Rovaniemi Art Museum. The highlight of Korundi is its inspiring premises, which date back to 1933 when a mail truck depot for the postal service was initially built here. The depot was only recently transformed in 2010 and 2011, having been remodeled by the architectural firm Juhani Pallasmaa. Korundi was actually one of the few buildings to have survived the wrath of World War II, and the new structure was fashioned from bricks gathered from ruins scattered across the city.
The center’s concert hall boasts a classical acoustic design and a seating capacity for 340 people. While it is the official residence for the Chamber Orchestra, it nevertheless plays host to other cultural events on a regular basis, including theater, opera and ballet. On the other hand, the museum features a striking angular design with unique bursts of light inspired by the artistic principles of montage and collage. It is dedicated mostly to Finnish modern art produced between the 1940s and the present, although it also showcases the work of international artists. Visitors will be exposed to a wide range of artistic media, including painting, drawing, etching, sculpture, photography and digital artworks.
