As it is known locally, “Markthal” or Market Hall is an open-air market located at the historical Binnenrotte next to the Blaak Station. Market Hall is the largest open-air marketplace in Rotterdam.
Since Rotterdam is famous as the architectural capital of the Netherlands, it is befitting that the Market Hall structure stands out as a unique type of building. In fact, Market Hall was designed in the shape of a giant airplane hangar. Inside this uniquely arch-shaped structure, you can find over one hundred stalls selling fresh foods, fish, flowers, and much more. In addition to the shopping stalls, you will also find restaurants, supermarkets and many other conveniences. The restaurants are located on the first floor above the market stalls level. In addition to traditional Rotterdam restaurants, you can also find a varied selection of Italian, Japanese, and Middle-Eastern style restaurants. While the main commercial area of the market itself is located on the ground floor, the arched structure above the market is comprised of residential apartments, making Market Hall a truly unique combination of form and function. Although conveniently located steps away from the Blaak train station, if you do choose to visit Market Hall by car, you can feel comforted by the fact that there is a large underground parking area located beneath the market place.
As you ride up and down the escalators inside Market Hall, keep an eye out for a fascinating history of iconic Rotterdam treasures. A varied cross-section of Rotterdam’s medieval predecessor, “Rotta’s” buried excavations are proudly displayed here. If you have time, it’s well worth a visit to one or more of the souvenir stalls to pick up a memento of your visit to Market Hall.
