This is one
of Pisa’s most popular, elegant and expensive shopping streets. The pedestrian street
runs from Piazza Garibaldi where there is a wooden sculpture of the Virgin Mary.
It is lined with top boutiques which are housed in stores underneath the
covered walkway with arched openings (arcade). The street has some popular bars
and restaurants as well as the best pastry store in the city - Salza. One of
the historical buildings along Borgo Stretto (literally Stretto neighborhood)
is where Galileo Galilei was born. The building is marked by a plaque above the
Settimelli Caffe.
During the Christmas
season there is a Christmas market on the small square on Borgo Stretto. Here you can buy tree decorations, winter
clothing, arts and crafts and the traditional nativity scenes. If you have seen
all of Borgo Stretto and are hungry for more shops then head for Corso Italia,
Pisa’s other famous shopping street.
