The town of Panzano in Italy’s Chianti region is situated on the road between Siena and Florence. As a result of its rather precarious location, Panzano was continuously caught in the crossfires of these cities when they fought each other during the medieval years. Panzano changed hands many times between the two superpowers. Visitors can choose one of two ways to enter the town. The first takes you directly into the historic center, where evidence of the original medieval walls, as well as quaint cobbled streets are still seen. Meander along the walls which have a number of superb restaurants to choose from. The other entrance introduces you to the more contemporary side of Panzano, including the modern square of Piazza Gastone Bucciarelli, also home to many cafes, restaurants and shops. The town has become almost a pilgrimage for food lovers who travel far and wide to buy meat from the Antica Macelleria Cecchini – a butcher’s shop that has been in existence for eight generations. Just a short ride out of Panzano, you will be able to visit the Pieve di San Leolino parish church, dating back to the 11th century. With its beautiful Romanesque architecture and Middle Ages artwork, this church is a favorite among visitors to Chianti.Plan your visit to Panzano to coincide with several exciting annual festivals, such as the Chianti wine festival, Vino al Vino which takes place on the third weekend of September, or the Festa della Stagion Bona, held on Liberation Day, April 25th.
