The city of Padua is the capital of the Province of Padua although sometimes included in the metropolitan area of Padua-Treviso-Venice. The city has a rural setting; the Brenta River flows along the northern districts; the Euganaean Hills to the southwest and the Bacchiglione River runs through the city. Padua is famous for its historic university, founded in 1222 which schooled Galileo Galilei and as the setting for Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Padua has arcaded streets; many bridges and Renaissance, medieval and modern architecture. Cappella Degli Scrovegni it the city’s top attraction; the Scrovengi Chapel is covered with frescoes by Giotto (1305) and is regarded as one of the most important fresco cycles in the world. The beautiful Piazza dei Signori is bordered by the Gran Guardia loggia. Palazzo della Ragione has a large roof unsupported by columns, the building stands on arches with an open loggia on the upper level. The fascinating Basilica di Sant’Antonio da Padova was built by Nicola Pisano and has four cloisters and seven cupolas including two pyramid-shaped. Prato della Valle is a large square with a green island in the middle surrounded by a channel of water lined with statues.
