Nuremberg Castle is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Nuremberg. It is a collection of fortified buildings, dating back to medieval ages. The castle has served as the residence for several German kings. The castle is divided into three sections which are the Imperial Castle or Kaiserburg, the former Burgraves’ castle or Burggrafenburg and Reichsstadtische Bauten. The castle is believed to have been erected around 1000 with several modifications carried out in the later time periods.
The Imperial Castle features Heavenly Gate which is situated adjacent to the Hasenburg tower. The castle has another tower called Sinwell Tower, which was built in the 13th century. The castle was supplied water through the Deep Well, which is located inside a half-timbered structure. The main building of the castle features two floors. The building is now home to a permanent exhibit about the castle. The castle also has a chapel known as the Imperial Chapel, which was built in the 13th century. It is fashioned in Romanesque style and consists of two chapels lying one above the other. These chapels are connected through an opening in the ceiling. There is also a Heathens’ Tower next to the chapel. There is a museum shop in the castle, housed in the former Ladies’ Building. It also plays a multimedia show about the history of the Imperial Castle.
While you are in the castle, pay a visit to the Burgraves’ Castle as well. It was located between the Luginsland and the Sinwell Tower. The castle was destroyed in 1420, but its remains are still visible.
