Built in 1929, the Foshay Tower is an historic skyscraper in Minneapolis modeled after the Washington Monument. It comprises 35 floors and stands a total of 447 feet high, rendering it one of the tallest structures in the city. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, it is famous for its distinct Art Deco style. The tower, currently a functioning hotel, features a museum and observation deck on its 30th floor, which wraps around the entire building. Here you will encounter spectacular panoramic views of the city. The museum and observation deck are both open every day from 11am until 5pm, with a modest admission fee attached. There are plenty of staff members around to offer you information and a short presentation on the building.
The museum features a range of objects that offer insight into Foshay Tower’s long and fascinating history – it was the tallest building in the American Midwest for 48 years. There are plenty of photographs and historic documents that reveal the building in its construction phase and early life, as well as design plans by its original designers and architects.
There is no view in Minneapolis quite like the view at the Foshay Tower observation deck. Here you will encounter the full scope of the vast Mississippi River, along with the city’s numerous public parks and historic architecture. Afterwards, you might want to dine at one of the hotel’s indulgent eating and drinking venues, including Manny’s Steakhouse, the Living Room Bar and the Prohibition Bar. The building is also surrounded by lively shops and restaurants.
