The first offshoot of the famous Parisian 20th
century art museum, Centre Pompidou outside of France is the Pompidou Center in
Malaga, Spain. The Pop-Up Pompidou is housed in a cuboid glass structure in
Malaga Port and opened its doors to the public in March, 2015. The center displays an excellent collection
of more than 80 works by world-class artists. Visitors have been able to view
Picasso’s The Flowered Hat, Francis Bacon’s self-portrait, The Frame
by Frida Kahlo, and Rene Magritte’s The Rape. Besides the many
paintings, you can also see sculptures and moving images. The works of art are
taken from the French Pompidou’s 100,000 strong collection and they rotate
every few years. The collection plays heavily on the fact that Pablo Picasso
was born in Malaga and a number of his works are on display. The works are
showcased in different categories, such as Metamorphoses, Self Portraits, The
Body, The Faceless Man and more.
The museum is housed in a large glass cube building known as
the Cubo, and boasts over 6,000 square meters of exhibition space. The gallery has permanent and temporary
exhibition space and is very spacious and well laid out. Descriptions of the works of art feature in
both English and Spanish. The unique building, designed by the Spanish
architectural firm L35, looks like a giant Rubik’s Cube and is an interesting
feature in itself.
Combine a visit to Centre Pompidou with a trip to the port,
where the museum is located.
