Just 31 miles outside the city center near the town of Aldea del Fresno is the Madrid Safari Park which is home to more than 500 animals from around the world. Among the resident animals there are monkeys, lions, bears, camels, giraffes, elephants, tigers and many more. The safari has an open drive-though "safari" which you can tour in your own car or the Safari transport; a zoo area where the enclosures are mostly glass so you can see the animals well and a recreational area with playground apparatus, pools and more. Some of the Safari highlights include the bird show, the lion taming show, the reptile show, the aviary and the most exiting of all the drive-through "safari" area. Here you can really feel like you are on safari in Africa driving through the open savannah where animals like zebras, rhinos and monkeys can come right up to your window. In some of the drive-through areas you can open your windows and in others you can't. In the petting zoo there are a number of approachable animals like goats and rabbits, you can also take a pony ride at the petting zoo. On the same site is a go-cart course, swimming pool, giant slide and paddle boats.
