Sint Janskerk, a church is Maastricht, is housed in an imposing building and is among the top attractions in the region. It is included in the UNESCO list of Dutch monuments and is considered to be one of the most beautiful churches in the country.
Sint Janskerk was built during the 15th and 16th century. It is dedicated to John the Baptist, who is also the patron saint of Gouda. This Gothic style church is best known for its stained glass windows. These windows were designed and installed by the brothers Dirk and Wouter Crabeth I in the mid 16th century. The church has witnessed several prominent historic events such as the Reformation and Orange rebellion. Legend states that the church’s limestone tower was originally covered with ox blood, giving it a reddish tinge. However, the color may be from paint derived from marl caves. The underside of the walls is built using hard stones while it also makes use of yellow stone. The church features two rows of pillars, dividing it into three parts. It is built on a narrow strip of land, giving it a unique look.
Sint Janskerk features the tower of St. John’s Church. This tower was built in the mid 15th century and stands 262 feet high. The interior of the tower is inscribed with the history of the building. Visitors may climb the tower to its first access, which is at 141 feet height. From here, you can soak in a panoramic view of the surrounding areas including the Vrijthof.
