The locals refer to Mount Rigi as the Queen of the Mountains
because it is the perfect mount for recreation all year round. The mount is
located on the edge of the Pre-Alps between Lake Lucerne, Lake Lauerz and Lake
Zug. It appears to be a free standing mountain and is visible from all parts of
the valley. It is famed for the magnificent views down the mountain slopes
across 13 lakes and into France and Germany. There are cog railway trains
departing from Vitznau and Goldau as well as a sightseeing cable car which
departs from Weggis.
In the summer you can follow 74.4 miles of walking paths of all
levels. In the winter there are 21.7 miles of winter walking trails which are kept
clear and well maintained. The mount is
car-free and the peace and quiet attracts people to the mount’s 30 hotels,
restaurants and mineral bath and spa. Visitors can ski on 5.6 miles of scenic slopes;
go sledging on the 6.2 miles of sledging runs; snowshoe walking along three marked
snowshoe paths; cross-country skiing (from Rigi Kaltbad to Rigi Scheidegg)
tobogganing; ice skate on a natural rink and paragliding. In summer there is
also mini-golf, biking and hiking.
You can take a sunrise cable car ride on Sundays from (June-September)
from Goldau to Rigi Kulm; in July and August see a nostalgic steam show on
Sundays; on Saturdays from (July-September) the aerial cable car Weggis-Rigi
Kaltbad is turned into a restaurant and there are fondue trips which combine a
train ride with a fondue dinner after the nostalgic carriage climbs the mount.
There are two round trips sold as packages from Lucerne – the Majestic Round
Trip and the Classic Rigi Round. The Majestic Trip includes a boat trip from
Lucerne to Vitznau, uphill to Rigi Kulm and down to Goldau on the cogwheel
railway then by train from Arth-Goldau back to Lucerne. The Classic Round Trip
includes a boat trip from Lucerne to Vitznau, uphill to Rigi Kulm and down to
Rigi Kaltbad on the cogwheel railway then the aerial cable car from Rigi
Kaltbad to Weggis and the return boat trip to Lucerne. The tickets for both
these round trips are sold as a package including all the transportation along
