This church goes by two names as it was converted into a
mosque in 1591. The Church of Theotokos Pammakaristos is a Byzantine Era church
which holds the largest number of Byzantine mosaics in Istanbul after the Chora
Church and Hagia Sophia. Members of the Palaiologan dynasty were buried here. The
church as constructed in 1292 for John Comnenus and his family and later
functioned as the city’s headquarters for the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate from
1456 to 1586. When the Muslim rulers took over the church was converted to a
mosque named in memory of Murat III’s conquests of Azerbaijan and Georgia. To
change the church into a mosque several walls were removed to make a large
prayer hall, however most of the early 14th century Byzantine
mosaics were spared in the parakklesion. Today the church is a museum. The
church has a funeral side chapel (parekklesion) which displays an important
example of Palaiologan (the last ruling family of the Byzantine Empire)
architecture. The side chapel features a dome ceiling covered in beautiful
mosaics depicting Christ surrounded by the prophets each holding a banner with
a Greek phrase. There are other mosaics on the walls, ceiling and in the apse
itself. The brick building is topped by several domes.
