Contrary to what the name suggests,
Plaza Nueva is one of the oldest squares in Granada. The plaza runs along the
Daro River with fantastic views on both sides. Originally the square was
constructed to cover up the Daro River itself; the river flows under it now as
well. Plaza Nuevo has been one of the most popular squares in Granada, the site
of bullfights and also tournaments.
Walk along Plaza Nueva and explore the
fantastic views on either side. The Royal Chancellery is on one side, designed
by Diego de Siloé, which today functions as the High Court. Another building,
designed by de Siloé, which makes for a beautiful sight is the Iglesia de San
Gil y Santa Ana. This church was built in 1537; to its right you find the Fountain
of the Bull, a construction that is quite recent, installed as recently as
1941. The views that stun you are the ones of the Alhambra on one side. Turn to
the other side and you see the Albaicin neighborhood. There are numerous lovely
restaurants as well on Plaza Nuevo where you can grab a good meal. If you have
the time, you can also watch street musicians busking and playing some lovely
local music. If you are here during a festival or a major event you will love
it as that is when the plaza comes alive, filled to the brim with people.
