Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas is located in Galway, Ireland. It is also known more simply as Galway Cathedral. Construction on the Galway Cathedral began in 1958, although it looks much older than it is. The beautifully designed building was completed and consecrated for Roman Catholic worship in 1965. The architect, John J. Robinson, designed the dome and pillars in the Renaissance style. The dome reaches up to 44.2 meters. Being built in the middle of the last century makes the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas the youngest stone cathedral in Europe.
In addition to the Renaissance features in the church, you will see the Romanesque nave arches, the Gothic windows, and the Spanish choir section. There are beautiful rose windows and mosaics. There is even a mosaic memorial to John F. Kennedy. The pipe organ was first built in 1966, and was expanded in 2006 – 2007. The organ can be heard during services that are held in the main cathedral, while a much smaller organ is used for smaller services in side chapels. The organ can also be heard in summer concerts that are held in the cathedral. There is an excellent range of modern church art including a mosaic of the crucifixion, stained glass windows, and the Stations of the Cross.
Visit the cathedral bookshop to buy religious books and other items such as gifts and cards. The bookshop is located in the nave of the cathedral, and is therefore closed during services. Masses are held daily, and visitors are welcome to join.
