In 1334, the San Pietro
Church was built on the ruins of a chapel that had been built in the 11th
century. San Pietro, or the Church of Saint Peter, is located in the upper area
of Corniglia, a small village in Cinque Terre. The basic design of the church
with different interior and exterior styles was that of the Fieschi family, the
feudal lords of the village.
The exterior of the San
Pietro Church is in the Ligurian Gothic style, while the interior is in the
Baroque style. Before entering the church, make sure to look at the beautiful
rose window designed by Pistoians Matteo and Petro da Campigna in 1351. You
will also see the statue of Saint Peter, which is just above the main entrance
of the church. The inside of the church houses a 12th century
baptismal font, and on either side of the altar are beautiful stained glass
windows. The frescoes alone make the visit to the church well worth it. The
church is dedicated to Saint Peter, who is the patron saint of Corniglia.
If you are traveling to
Cinque Terre at the end of June, make sure to see special festival with a
religious procession from the San Pietro Church to the Santa Maria terrace. All
those who take part are given some Torta dei Fieschi, a traditional food made
of baked rice with cheese and eggs.
