The Château de Vêves is a 15th-century castle perched on a rocky hill at the heart of the scenic village of Celles-Houyet in the Walloon province of Namur, some 8 kilometers to the southeast of Dinant. Known for its fairytale-like appearance, it measures five stories high, and boasts steep stone walls and distinct cone-shaped towers pierced with thin slit windows. The castle is enclosed by a central courtyard overlooked by a number of elegant stone and timber galleries. It is open to the public for guided tours of its ornate interiors, which comprise a wide range of styles that reflect several periods. These include medieval-style kitchens, and family rooms and salons adorned with 18th-century finishings. Some things visitors will encounter include sculptures, artworks and inspiring tapestries. The castle is still owned by the descendants of the prestigious Beaufort family, which consists of a long lineage of members that include the Seigneurs de Celles, who owned a 12th-century fortress on the same location. While it is open to the public, it is still used as a private residence. Some other nearby attractions in the area include the picturesque village of Celles, which is known for its lush rolling countryside and neat cobbled streets lined with boutique shops, restaurants and sidewalk cafés.
