Cambridge lies on the River Cam in Cambridgeshire. In the 11th century religious orders established themselves here and in 1209 a group of religious scholars left Oxford University and founded Cambridge University. Since then the city has been associated with learning. The university campus has 31 collage buildings each centered on a courtyard. The oldest college is Peterhouse founded in 1284. King's College Chapel and King's College are medieval masterpieces established by Henry VI in 1441. The magnificent building has a fan vaulted ceiling; an altarpiece by Rubens; 16th century stained glass windows and four octagonal turrets. See the Tudor and Jacobean architecture of St. John's College; the 12th century Round Church and Queen's Collage which boasts an 18th century sundial. Other colleges worth visiting include Emmanuel College; Jesus College; Magdalene College; St. John's College and Trinity College, the largest of the college complexes. Visit Fitzwilliam Museum one of Britain's finest art museums housed in a neo-classical building. While in Cambridge go punting on the Cam and walk through the University Botanic Garden.
