Bucharest’s National Museum of Natural History, located in Soseaua Kiseleff, was named after the famous Romanian biologist and naturalist, Grigore Antipa, in 1908 when the museum was purpose-built. He ran the museum until his death in 1944. However, his memory lives on through the museum’s fascinating exhibits featuring a vast array of Romanian fauna and flora, together with the geological histories through which life in Eastern Europe has flourished for millions of years. There are also a number of temporary exhibits that change throughout the year. The museum makes for a fun day trip, and offers a wide range of interactive displays and films to help you envisage the secrets of the natural world. There is even a giant fabricated cave in the basement area, where the exhibits on plant and animal life are kept.
While the museum contains enough to keep you inspired for hours, the building itself, built in the neo-classical style, is an architectural showpiece, boasting breath-taking high ceilings, Greek columns and marble archways. If biodiversity interests you, then it is definitely worth taking a trip to Romania’s première Natural History Museum. It is also very child-friendly, offering plenty to keep your kids entertained.
