Belfast is the second largest city in Ireland, after Dublin. It is the capital of Northern Ireland and is situated right at the mouth of the River Lagan. The city is perched in between low hills on all sides and the metropolitan urban area of Belfast is home to just under five hundred thousand people. Belfast is especially intriguing for tourists given its almost lawless past. During the period between 1969 and 1997, Belfast became infamous globally due to the high number of bomb and gun attacks. The violence rendered many parts of the city downright dangerous, there were no laws, and it was a doggy dog world if there ever was one. However, those days are well behind now. Modern-day Belfast is relatively a lot safer. It also offers plenty of attractions for tourists. The city is loosely demarcated into Central, South, North, West and East Belfast. All five districts are certainly not void of tourist attractions. The central part of the city boasts the City Hall which is probably the most iconic building in Belfast and also other sightseeing opportunities such as the Ormeau Baths Gallery and Saint Anne’s Cathedral. The South is home to Queen’s university and has a lot of college going crowd and hence a vibrant pub culture and night life. The North is where you can find Belfast Zoo and Belfast Castle. The cultural center of Belfast is in the West and the East is home to the Stormont Parliament Buildings and the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.
