The village of Artimino is surrounded by Tuscan hills in the winegrowing country of Vino di Carmignano. The village is a few minutes from one of the most beautiful of the Medici-family villas, Poggio a Caiano. As early as the 8th century BC Artimino was an important center; this has been determined by the number of Etruscan burial chambers found in the area. The area has been cultivating wine and olives since the Roman –Era. In the 10th century AD the Artimino Castle was erected. The area was a popular royal hunting ground and in 1594 the Grand Duke Ferdinando I moved his court to the Villa La Ferdinanda. The villa is recognizable by its numerous chimneys (“Villa of 100 chimneys). Visits to the villa are free but must be booked in advance. Adjacent to the grand villa are two buildings from the same era which now house a famous hotel and restaurant. Visit Artimino Farm to taste the wine and olive oil; connoisseurs will enjoy the Carmignano DOCG and Chianti DOCG produced here. The farm, restaurant, hotel and villa are all part of the Artimino Estate which is a UNESCO site.
