The coastal city of Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska and home to more than 40% of the state’s population. Anchorage is situated on a peninsula between Cook Inlet and the Chugach Mountains. In 1964 most of the downtown area was destroyed by the Good Friday Earthquake. Learn about the earthquake from the Earthquake Park interpretive displays. Anchorage’s main cultural venue is the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. Anchorage museums include the Alaska Museum of Natural History and the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum. Visit the Anchorage Museum which displays exhibits on Alaskan history and culture as well as art work. The Imaginarium Discovery Center is great for families and the Alaska Native Heritage Center features costumed actors and a recreated traditional Native village. The Portage Glacier lies 80km southeast of the city; you can take a boat tour on the lake to get close to the glacier. Also ride the Alaska Railroad, do the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and visit the nearby Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Anchorage hosts several exciting annual events including the January Anchorage Folk Festival; the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and the Fur Rendezvous Festival in February which features the International Ice Carving Competition.
