Alberobello is a small town in the metropolitan area of Bari. The town is famed for its unique trulli buildings which are a listed UNESCO site. Trulli houses (singular – trullo) are made of whitewashed stone with conical roofs. The trulli were built with dry stone and no mortar. By building in this way the 16th century residents avoided paying taxes on the dwellings. The villagers were feudal vassals until 1797. The main reason to visit Alberobello is to wander the streets admiring the unusual trulli buildings. You can even stay in one of these structures. One of the best parts of the town to see trulli buildings is in the Rione Monte district. Also see trulli structures in Aia Piccola and a few trullo in among the “normal” buildings of the town. See the trullo church, Chiesa di Sant’Antonio. Other places to see include the Chiesa dei Santi Medici Cosma e Damiano and Trullo Sovrano, a large trullo house with period furniture. 10 trulli have been joined to house the Museo del Territorio. Some of the rooms in the museum have been recreated to show how people lived in trulli during the 16th century.
