The Wells Fargo company was founded by Henry Wells and William Fargo in 1852, they began by providing financial services to pioneers and their reputation grew. Today more than 160 years later, the banking and financial services giant is based in San Francisco. There are 9 Wells Fargo Museums across the USA each presenting a different aspect of the company's role in American history.
The San Francisco Museum reopened in 2014 after a make-over which included the addition of interactive displays, social media opportunities and a mobile activity experience. The museum now has a new look and many fascinating pieces in the collection which illustrate the history of America through this iconic company. The San Francisco museum is located at 420 Montgomery Street, at the same were the business first opened its doors 160 years ago which is also at the company headquarters.
The highlights of the museum include a 1860s Wells Fargo concord stagecoach which was used to transport pioneers and gold across the western plains. Visitors can see gold dust, gold ore and artifacts from California's Gold Rush period. There are letters written during the Gold Rush, these documents were couriered across the open plains, often under dangerous conditions. You can see a working telegraph and even send messages to other Wells Fargo Museums. There are works of art on display created by artists in the region. You can visit the museum either independently or take advantage of a guided tour.
