The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, established in 1973, was the
first of its kind to combine science exhibits with additional features such as
an IMAX Dome and a planetarium. The museum is located in San Diego’s Balboa
Park and is named for the US aviation pioneer who was the father of the US Air
Mail service. The ‘Fleet’ features over 100 interactive science exhibits across
eight galleries, as well as the incredible Giant Dome Theatre, the world’s
first. Other features of the Fleet
include the Tinkering Studio, ideal for kids to invent, experiment and
create. Another favorite among the
little ones is Kid City, built for kids aged 5 and under.
There are twelve permanent exhibitions that make up the science center. Block Busters invites you to build structures with KEVA planks, while the Cellular Journey exhibit introduces you to human cell biology and the importance of stem cells. Look, Touch, Listen encourages visitors to use their senses and engage their minds with fun, interactive activities such as the Tornado and the Turntable. The Origins in Space expo features the ViewSpace theater where multimedia presentations thrill the crowd with spectacular astronomy images from the Hubble Space Telescope. Also among the exhibits is the Nano exhibit which essentially allows you to discover a world that you cannot see through the wonders of nanoscale science, technology and engineering. The So Watt exhibit focuses on electricity production and alternative sources of energy.
