The open air Budhanilkantha Temple is considered the most beautiful and enigmatic stone carving in Nepal. Also known as the Sleeping Vishnu or the Jalakshayan Narayan, the statue that is dedicated to the Lord Krishna is made from a single block of black asphalt stone. It is 16 feet in length and lies in a reclining position inside a tank of water that is 43 feet in length. Vishnu’s legs are crossed, while his head is cradled by the eleven heads of Shesha, the multi-headed king of the serpent deities. His four hands hold objects that are symbols of his divine qualities.
Despite its name, the temple does not have anything to do with Buddha. Legend has it that the statue was sculpted during the reign of Vishnu Gupta in the 7th century and brought to its current location by this monarch.
The Budhanilkantha Temple attracts pilgrims around the year, but especially during the time that the Haribondhini Ekadeshi Mela takes place on the 11thday of the Hindu month of Kartika. This is the main festival to celebrate Lord Vishnu’s awakening from his long slumber, and the festival is attended by thousands of people.
The temple is located 5 miles from Kathmandu city at the foot of the Shivpuri Hills. Combine your trip with a visit to the Shivapuri National Park which is located just above it.
