Lokrum is
a must-see destination for anyone who visits Dubrovnik. Located just over half
a kilometer out to sea from Dubrovnik, Lokrum is a small, picturesque island on
the Adriatic Sea. The island boasts of a rich and colorful history, having at
one time served as the holiday home of Maximilian, the Archduke of Austria.
There are
many other man-made attractions that serve as excellent reminders of the
island’s illustrious history. The amazingly complex structure of the Benedictine
Monastery is a prime example, as are the Romanesque-Gothic basilica dating back
to the 12th to 13th centuries, and the 15th
century monastery. Equally rewarding to casual tourists as to those involved in
academic and historical research, these structures offer an excellent glimpse
into Lokrum’s medieval past.
The opportunity
to commune with nature is a large part of the island’s appeal, with the calm
and serene beaches attracting scores of local residents and tourists from all
over Europe. The island also has a 10-meter deep salt lake that most locals
regard as a smaller version of the Dead Sea. With numerous walking trails,
hidden nooks and crannies, and a gently sloping cliff, the Lokrum is always good for several hours of exploration and relaxation.
Even more
treats are in store for nature lovers, particularly for those with an affinity
for exotic plant life. Explore the wonderful botanical garden with its
extensive array of plants, highlighted by the giant cacti. Visit the Purple
Cave and marvel at the amazing purple seaweed from which the cave draws its
name. With its rich and diverse plant life, Lokrum is a worthy
destination for nature lovers of all persuasions.
Needless
to say, the view alone is more than worth making the trip for. The impressive city
walls of Dubrovnik are readily visible from the island, and clambering up the
highest point not only offers an even more breathtaking view, but an up-close
look at Royal Castle, as well.
Keep in mind
that Lokrum is only accessible during the day, and only
between the months of April and
November. If you can manage to make the trip however, you will find the
experience well worth your while.
